What saddle leather is
Saddle leather is a thick, firm, full-grain leather originally developed for exactly what the name says: saddlery, where the material has to hold its shape under stress for decades. It is dense enough to stand on its own, which is why bags like the Urbanite belt bag or the Golden City crossbody keep their architectural silhouette instead of collapsing into a soft pouch.
Why vegetable tanning matters
Around 90% of the world's leather is chrome tanned: fast, cheap and reliant on heavy metals. Vegetable tanning is the old way. The hides are cured slowly with natural tannins from bark, wood and leaves, a process that takes weeks instead of hours. The result is a leather that is free of chromium, biodegradable at the end of its life and, most importantly, alive. Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and deepens with sunlight, hand oils and use. The patina your bag develops is unique to you; no two age the same way.

A bag that is built to last twenty years should not fail at the zipper pull. That is why we pair the leather with stainless steel hardware, the same material family as our jewelry: it does not rust, does not chip and does not shed its coating onto the leather.

How to care for vegetable-tanned leather
The routine is simple. Keep the bag away from prolonged rain; if it gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, never on a radiator. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and treat it with a small amount of colorless leather balm once or twice a year. Minor scratches can usually be massaged out with a fingertip and a little warmth. Store it stuffed with paper in the dust bag when not in use.
